The Sustainable Farm Families (SFF) program has been very popular and demand is higher than supply. The evidence supporting the program is increasing farmers knowledge and skills and also supporting farmers to change their lifestyle and risk behaviours. The program fits well in the community/ primary health portfolio and could be delivered by rural based nurses but requires strong industry support and an understanding of adult learning and social research models. SFF also has the ability of showcasing an innovative approach to long-standing rural health issues.
In 2005, to enable wider delivery of the project, the Victorian Department of Human Services recognised the need to train other rural nurses to deliver the project. Training others is vital in developing this facet of Sustainable Farm Families to enable feedback and improvement as well as providing benefit to the participating practitioners as it is an exciting and well-delivered program. It is also important to ensure the evidence base and the philosophy of the supporting theories behind the Sustainable Farm Families project is understood and implemented. The principle of linking with industry and intersectoral collaboration is reinforced throughout the training otherwise the value and learnings to date will not be put into practice.
We have trained another 24 Victorian Nurses from various regions with the aim to go back to their region and deliver a Sustainable Farm Families project with assistance and support from Western District Health Service the main principals of the program.
